Lot Description:
An Important Bronze Figure of Kubera
Indonesia, 9th/10th Century
Seated on a circular pillow over a stepped plinth supported by two lions, with his right hand in varada mudra and holding the mongoose in his left, wearing long flowing robes richly adorned with jeweled armlets and necklaces, his face with a serene expression with wide open eyes surmounted by a conical headdress, the throneback modeled as a gateway flanked by leogryphs mounted on elephants in openwork, all supporting a flaming nimbus, the pinth centered by a cluster of jewels, with a deep brown patina overall 13¾ in. (34.8 cm.) high
This bronze figure of Kubera is among the very few comparatively large Indonesian bronze figures recorded in public and private collections; another figure of Kubera is in the collection of the Musée Guimet, see A. Le Bonheur, La sculpture indonesienne au Musee Guimet, 1971, cat. no. 3 814, p. 182f. In its general concept, it follows contemporary Indian prototypes created in Nalanda, Bihar; Compare a related example in Inde, Cinq Mille Ans d’Art, Paris, Musee du Petit Palais, 1978/79, cat. no. 97, from the National Museum, New Delhi. The proximity in style is indicative of the direct exchange of Indian bronzes to the South-East Asian region at that time, likely by sea, disseminating Pala style and fueling further regional stylistic evolution.

The complexes from which this head probably came, Candi Sukuh or Candi Ceta (candi means “temple”), are among the last monuments constructed from the glorious Hindu- Buddhist tradition of Java that had brought forth such extraordinary amalgamations of architecture and sculpture as Borobudur some seven centuries earlier. One trend over those centuries was toward greater stylization. Here, the head seems to have been regularized into an egg shape and the upturned curves of mouth, eyes, and eyebrows have been made to echo each other. This head appears to have ornaments, or perhaps flower buds, looped over the ears and extending toward the face.

Description:
The people of Nias Island off the southwest coast of Sumatra are renowned for their monumental stone carving. Much of Nias stone sculpture is commemorative in nature—created to honor members of the nobility, both living and dead. Ritual stone seats (osa’ osa) are unique to the central region of the island; they serve as chairs for high-ranking nobles at feasts and other ceremonial occasions, where they are set up near the home of the feast giver as a sign of his or her exalted rank. This example is of a type called “hornbill” (gogowaya), named for a large bird important in many Indonesian and Melanesian cultures. The “hornbill” here is depicted not as a discrete species but as a mythical animal that combines the teeth of a fearsome carnivore and the antlers of a deer with the distinctive beak, crest, and tail of the hornbill. The result is a composite creature, which acts as a fearsome protector of the nobility and their ancestors.
The artists of Nias island are notable for their monumental stone sculpture. Created to honor nobles of either sex, large stone sculptures were commissioned by aristocratic men as part of the ceremonial requirements of owasa (“feasts of merit”). Stone seats (osa’osa) are unique to Central Nias, where they serve as thrones for high-ranking nobles on important occasions.
Osa’osa often bear multiple names, describing different aspects of their form and imagery. Broadly, this work is a si sara bagi, indicating that it has one (rather than three) heads. More poetically it is called laeluo (“leaves in the sun”), a metaphorical reference to its aristocratic sponsor, whose resplendence illuminates the village like sunlight shining on the leaves of trees. Specifically, it is a gogowaya (hornbill), a large forest bird, depicted as a fantastic composite creature with the legs and teeth of a feline or crocodile, the antlers of a deer, and the beak, crest, and tail of a hornbill. Serving as a supernatural guardian for its noble rider, its ferocity is emphasized by a warrior’s necklace (kalabubu) worn around its throat.
